This book is called TRUTH OR DARE. It’s by P.J NIGHT and its about
a girl named Abby who has a sleepover and receives a scary text in the middle
of the night. Over the next few days, after the sleepover, she begins getting
more scary text messages until one fine day she spots a girl peeking into her
window whose hair and eyes are exactly the same as one of her dead classmates
Sara! When Abby and her boyfriend Jake go for the school dance, which is
dedicated to Sara, Jake starts to miss Sara (Sara and Jake loved each other
when Sara was alive). Abby receives yet another scary text and shows it to Jake
saying that she thinks that Sara is behind all the scary text messages. Just
then they receive another scary text saying “742”which shocks Jake because this
was a code that he and Sara used when she was alive. Jake rushes Abby to go to the cemetery where
they realize that it is not Sara but Sara’s cousin Samantha who has been acting
creepy all this time. In the story, she says, she has read all of Sara and
Jake’s emails and simply did all of this to meet Jake! The story ends with Abby
inviting Samantha to her house for a sleepover and then Abby figures out that
Samantha was not the one who put a lock of red hair and a purple ribbon in Abbie’s
drawer and there is a mystery left unsolved!
What I personally like about the book is the way P.J. NIGHT describes
the way Abby feels when she gets close to where Sara is buried like heavy
footsteps, difficulty breathing and stuff. But, I also wonder why Samantha
couldn’t have gone to Jake herself and said “ I am Sara’s cousin and I wanted
to meet you!! ”.
I would give it 6 OUT OF 10 RATING.

I love the way this young book reporter has highlighted a potential weakness in the plot! Well constructed!
ReplyDeleteMy guess is had samantha walked upto jake and told him that, then the dramatic possibilities of the story would have ended right there :-) i havent read the book but reading the review i got a plot and characters very clearly but i think it lacked a bit in conveying the fear and dread that is so much an integral part of a scary story. :-) looking forward for more atmospheric detailing in reviews of thrillers and scary stories Adya. Keep it up.

ReplyDeleteI am a bit confused by the plot. Why did Samantha do all that ? What did jake and Abby find in the cemetery which made them realize that Samantha is behind all the spooky texts ? Is it Abby or Abbie ? What is the link of red lock of hair and purple ribbon with the plot ?
